Record Low Unemployment & Record High Employment in Rochester

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The unemployment rate in the Rochester area in April was the lowest ever recorded.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development says the jobless rate in Olmsted County last month was down a full percentage point from March at 1.2-percent. The previous record low unemployment rate for the Rochester area was 1.4-percent in November 1998. A year ago, the jobless rate was 3.3-percent.

The jobs statistics for Olmsted County also show overall employment hit a new record high for a fourth consecutive month. The total now stands at 90,718, which is up by a little more than 300 jobs when compared to March. The record-low unemployment rate was due to that increase and a drop in the size of the labor force. The state agency reported the local labor force shrank from the record high of 92,434 in March to 91,865 last month.

Across the region, every county reported unemployment rates under 2-percent in April. Olmsted County was tied with Winona County for the lowest rate at 1.2-percent. Dodge and Freeborn Counties had the highest rates at 1.7-percent.
