Records Indicate Rochester Teen Thinks He is Possessed by Devil
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A court hearing has been scheduled next week for a Rochester teenager who recently attacked his father, leaving the 74-year-old man without his eyes.
The Aug 14th hearing for 18-year-old Mahad Aziz will deal with two issues: a possible commitment as a mentally ill and dangerous person and a request to treat him with neuroleptic drug therapy. A court document says the therapy is often referred to as antipsychotic medications that “can help prevent a patient from harming themselves or others.”
That request came from the Mayo Clinic doctor who has been treating the teenager since he was admitted to St. Marys Hospital after the July 27th attack.
The report indicates Aziz “thinks he is possessed by the devil” and that he attacked his father because “he saw the devil in his eyes.” Since he was admitted, the report says Aziz has “required repeated sedation due to ongoing erratic and self-injurious behavior, including repeated attempts to gouge out his own eyes.”
A judge has to approve the request before the medication can begin because of the teen’s mental illness. He has been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
If the judge also rules Aziz is mentally ill and dangerous, it’s expected he will be committed indefinitely to the state security hospital in St. Peter.
It’s possible he will never be prosecuted for the assault.
