Winona, MN (KROC AM News) - A barge struck one of the piers of the Highway 43 Bridge that crosses the Mississippi River in Winona Tuesday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says inspectors checked the damage and determined the bridge “remains structurally sound and safe” and that repairs will be made at a later date.

MDOT says the inspectors called the damage superficial and that the bridge “performed as it was designed.” The bridge opened two years ago. MnDOT says the bridge’s “concrete thickness, reinforcement and deeper pilings into the river bed were all aimed at safely sustaining a collision.”

The barge was headed downstream when it struck the pier just after noon. No injuries were reported and MnDOT says bridge traffic was not affected.
