Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester City Council has scheduled an emergency meeting Thursday to decide what to do about the face mask mandate ordered by Mayor Kim Norton.

The mandate was included in the mayor’s Declaration of Local Emergency that was issued Tuesday morning. It will expire Friday morning.

The council has three possible options:

  • Make no changes, except to shorten the length of the declaration, currently set to expire Oct. 18
  • Amend the declaration
  • Reject the declaration or allow it to expire

The DLE covers essentially all indoor settings in the City.

It requires masks in any place where children under 12 might be, as well as any place “medically vulnerable” individuals might be. The expansive definition of "medically vulnerable" included in the DLE would cover the majority of adults, and likely a large majority of adults.

The expiration of the DLE would not change pandemic response tactics already in place, including the masking requirement in City facilities, remote meetings, and other mitigation measures in place for the city organization.

Thursday’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 3:30 pm.

News update:  Weekly tests of unvaccinated Minnesota students and teachers.
