Did you know the Rochester Fire Department (FFD) has a High School Firefighting Program? It's #TRUE. And they're looking for students to join up right now.

We are actively recruiting next year’s juniors and seniors for the 2022-2023 school year who are interested in participating. Schools included are Rochester, Pine Island, Stewartville, Dover-Eyota, and Byron.
If interested, please contact your guidance counselor as soon as possible. Space is limited to 48 students. (RFD Facebook)

Rochester Fire Department High School Firefighting Program

The RFD, with Riverland Community College, hosts the program for local 11th and 12th graders annually. Plus, completing the course earns college credits for students and state certification is offered at the end of the program. It's a seven-day hands-on program.

Obviously, not as complete as the full training and education the Rochester FIrefighters experience, but a good strong taste. From a personal point of view, I have to say this is an amazing offering for students. A week of the program, knowledge gained, and even if you don't go on to be a firefighter, you'll have found strength in you you might not have known was there.

Does It Cost Me Any Money?

Nope. According to the RFD, it's free to the students. Books are provided by the student's school district and all fire gear is provided by RFD. The students ARE responsible for their travel to and from the program (7 hands-on learning days).

Is The RFD High School Firefighter Program Educational?

According to the RFD -

The RFD High School Firefighter Program is a hybrid course, meaning classwork can be done in school or at home, and RFD instructors hose seven hands-on days at various locations in Rochester over the course of the school year.

The program covers all of the basic firefighter courses needed to apply for a fire department, including:

Firefighter 1
Firefighter 2
Hazmat Operations
The course earns students a total of nine college credits from Riverland Community College.
Firefighter 1: Five Credits
Firefighter 2: Two Credits
Hazmat Operations: Two Credits
