Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Rochester voters will decide the fate of a proposal to help raise extra money for the city's parks and recreation system.
The City Council Monday voted to place the proposal on the Nov. 3rd ballot.
The Parks and Recreation Dept. says the new property tax levy would raise up to $2-million the first year. The department says the new levy would add $33 to the annual property tax bill of the average homeowner.
The department says it has been searching for new ways to cover the expenses of maintaining the existing park and recreation system and new projects as its annual budgets are inadequate.
The department says a recent survey of 300 Rochester voters found a majority would support the new levy.
The council also approved a request to move away from future cul-de-sacs in new development projects. The city Public Works Dept. says this will save maintenance costs.
