Spring Grove Outlasts LeRoy-Ostrander In Shootout
If you like points, Spring Grove and LeRoy-Ostrander put on a show. Even if you don't like points it was a good battle between the Lions and Cardinals.
Spring Grove jumped out to a quick 21-0 lead, but the Cardinals were able to get the offense clicking in the second quarter after Carter Johnson ran for a 42-yard score to make it 21-8. The Lions answered with an Alex Folz 76-yard touchdown to make it 28-8.
Then it got interesting.
Toward the end of the second quarter, the Cardinals were working to make it a two-possession game with a score, and with 28 seconds left Quarterback Trey Hungerholt scrambled for a 17-yard score to make it 28-16 at the break.
Alex Folz opened the second half with a 50-yard touchdown run to blow the lead up to 35-16 and then Folz ran in his fourth touchdown of the game from one-yard out to make it 42-16.
LeRoy-Ostrander was able to string a couple of big plays together including Hungerholt hitting Riley Olson for a 51-yard touchdown to bring it back to 42-24. The Lions responded with a 32-yard touchdown for Alex Folz, but the Cardinals were able to get another big play, this time a 37-yard touchdown connection from Hungerholt to Olson, and then an interception of Folz turned into a four-yard touchdown run for Hungerholt to make the 49-38 in the fourth.
Spring Grove was able to take control late in the game, getting two more scores including a six-yard touchdown run Tyler Kersten and then Folz connected with Ethan Matzke to make ti 63-38.
The shoutout was predicated on big plays, as Alex Folz finished with 350 rushing yards and five scores for Spring Grove, while Noah Elton and Ethan Matzke each caught a touchdown. Kersten had two touchdowns.
Hungerholt had two touchdowns on the ground and two through the air to Olson, and Johnson had the other touchdown for LeRoy-Ostrander.
With the win, Spring Grove capped off an 8-0 season, while the Cardinals fell to 2-6.
Spring Grove's defense early was able to lead them to the win, with excellent help from an offense that was stopped on only three of their possessions, two interceptions and the final drive of the first half.
