Minneapolis (KROC AM News) - A St Paul man who beat up a US Postal Service employee has been sentenced to federal prison.

The US Attorney’s office in Minneapolis says the incident happened in June 2020 at the post office in Oakdale.

Prosecutors say 23-year-old James Jackson went to the office to pick up a package. But the postal employee refused to give Jackson the package “because his name and address did not match the recipient or sender address.”

Jackson left but “returned multiple times that same day, each time trying to convince the postal employee to give him the package.” Jackson returned just as the office was closing “and again demanded the package.”

Prosecutors say the employee walked away and that’s when “Jackson leapt over the service counter, followed the employee into the back office, and punched the employee repeatedly in the head.” During the struggle, the employee fell to the ground. Other employees eventually intervened and restrained Jackson.

Prosecutors say “the employee suffered scrapes, abrasions, and bruises to his head and knees, as well as a badly broken finger that required surgery to repair.”

The package was later searched and investigators say “ it contained approximately 500 grams of marijuana.”

Jackson was sentenced Wednesday to 18 months in prison.

“This defendant attacked an innocent U.S. Postal Service employee, a public servant, who was simply doing his job,” said Acting U.S. Attorney W. Anders Folk. “Postal workers are frontline employees who serve the public during challenging times, particularly throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and they deserve to be safe and free from violence as they carry out their duties.”
