This Squirrel Thinks It’s A Rooster
I just bet you didn't know that January 21 is Squirrel Appreciation Day. According to several Internet sites, Squirrel Appreciation Day is set aside to "celebrate and honor squirrels and the contribution they make to the environment". I don't know about all that; I just love the little critters. A few little known facts: there are 265 species of squirrels world wide, 44 species being flying squirrels. A group of squirrels is called a scurry. I have a scurry of squirrels that frequent my backyard for treats of old bread, peanuts, birdseed and the occasional orange peel. One particular squirrel is so used to me and my feeding schedule, he sits outside my backdoor waiting for food, as you'll see in one of the photos below. That snow-covered squirrel photo sparked a Facebook conversation with my friend and her mom about knitting my squirrel a sweater! And check him out on top of the shed. He sits there many mornings at sun-up, I'm surprised he doesn't crow! Here's to you, my backyard friends, for bringing smiles to my face. I do appreciate you!
