Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - It turns out there was much more violence involved in a domestic incident in Rochester earlier this week than what was first reported.
Police arrested 31-year-old Karlwin Richards early Monday for assaulting his girlfriend. Police say the 19-year-old victim suffered significant injuries and was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Richards was arraigned Wednesday on felony domestic assault charges and his bail was set at $250,000.
According to the criminal complaint, officers were called to an apartment complex around 5:45 AM Monday where the victim lived with Richards and his brother. A tenant reported seeing the victim in the hallway suffering from head and other injuries. Before the tenant could call 911, Richards appeared and dragged the victim down the hallway. Officers realized other calls had been made about the same victim, starting Sunday night.
They were able to identify Richards as the suspect and eventually found him and his girlfriend in his apartment. They also found a man hiding in the shower who said he was Richards’ father. He told police he came to the apartment in an effort to “calm things down.” The father also told police Richards “kicked and punched him” when he tried to stop him from assaulting his girlfriend.
The complaint says an officer observed the girlfriend “had two black, swollen eyes, and was bruised all over her face and multiple lumps on her forehead.” The officer also observed “terrible bruising on her left tricep area and what appeared to be a boot mark on her upper left arm, just below her deltoid and bruising on her back and the tops of both shoulders.”
Surveillance video also showed Richard “throwing the victim to the ground and punching her.”
Police later learned Richards was arrested for assaulting the same woman in January and had been ordered not to have contact with her.
He also has seven domestic violence-related convictions on his record dating back to 2016.
