Contact With Power Lines Blamed For Recent Helicopter Crash Near Elgin
Elgin, MN (KROC-AM News) - The National Transportation Safety Board has determined the recent crash of a crop-dusting helicopter occurred when the aircraft's rotors came into contact with some power lines.
The helicopter exploded when it crashed into a farm field near Elgin on the afternoon of July 19th. The pilot, 40-year-old Corey Adcock of Texas, was killed in the accident.
The NTSB’s preliminary report says a witness saw the helicopter make two passes over a set of power lines while spraying a field before attempting to fly under the power lines on the third pass. The witness says he had just entered a large pole barn when he “heard a loud boom, and the pole barn shook.” He then saw smoke rising from the crash site and found the helicopter engulfed in flames.
The NTSB says the wreckage at the site and damage to the power lines suggests a rotor struck and frayed one of the power lines and severed another. Investigators determined there was less than 20-feet between the top of the corn in the field and the height of the severed power line.
The preliminary report, which is subject to change before the NTSB issues the final report on the crash, did not find any evidence of a mechanical malfunction of the aircraft or its engine.
