20 Tons of Food Collected in Rochester – in One Day
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - If your mail was late Saturday, there’s a good reason.
Besides delivering mail, Rochester’s Postal Service letter carriers were also busy collecting more than 20 tons of food. Saturday, May 13 was the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger drive by letter carriers to help restock food shelves around the country.
Donations in Rochester kept volunteers busy into Saturday evening processing the thousands of cans, boxes and containers of food items. Rochester donations were given to the Channel One food bank.
Spokeswoman Linda Olson says as of Monday, the donation total had gone over 41,000 pounds. She predicts the final number will be about the same as last year, around 44,000 pounds. Olson says Seneca Foods also donated 33,000 pounds of food as part of the drive in memory of two local carriers.
