Halloween Is The Busiest Day of The Year for Criminals
Kids aren't the only ones roaming neighborhoods looking for goodies on Halloween. It's the busiest day of the year for criminals too. Travelers Insurance released data that shows a 24% spike in crime-related insurance claims on Halloween.
Home burglaries rise by 60% because people get distracted or feel safe because so many of their neighbors are patrolling the streets. If you aren't going to be home you should leave lights on and lock your doors to deter potential criminals. Thieves also look for running cars - If you're taking your kids trick-or-treating, and you get out to walk a block with them, make sure to lock your vehicle and hide valuables under the seat.
Nerd Wallet writer Alex Glenn also reminds people to keep their plans off of Facebook. Don't let everyone, including would-be burglars, know if you're going to be away from home.
