SE MN Festival Started in 1946 is Still Celebrated Annually
During the summer and fall, we've got plenty of festivals and fairs going on throughout southeast Minnesota. One of them that's still coming up this year is an annual festival that has been going on for 76 years, since 1946!
The celebration is held over in Kellogg, Minnesota and it's all about a favorite summer fruit... watermelon! It's the Kellogg Watermelon Festival, the 76th annual one is coming up in just a couple of weeks.
I have never been to the Watermelon Festival but I do love watermelon and it sounds like a great small-town festival to check out. The official dates are Friday, September 9th through Sunday, September 11th. Most of the events will take place on Main Street in Kellogg.
They just shared this year's schedule of events on the Facebook page. There will be food vendors, carnival rides, and obviously a parade. There's also going to be a kid's lighted dance (that's on the 9th), the melon market (Saturday the 10th from 9 AM - 4 PM on Main Street), the 4H petting zoo (Saturday the 10th from 1 - 3 PM), and after the parade, everyone gets free watermelon!
There are so many other fun events that will happen during the Watermelon Festival. The entire schedule of events can be found on their Facebook page or below.
You know what festival we should have here in Rochester? A corn cob festival! Ya know, because we have the corn cob water tower! Who's with me on this?
