Mabel-Canton Holds Off Spring Grove In SEC Matchup
The Mabel-Canton Cougars were able to hit at the free-throw line late and hold off the Spring Grove Lions in a Southeast Conference girls basketball showdown 34-31 Tuesday night at Mabel-Canton High School.
It was a back and forth battle throughout, but Mabel-Canton got a huge lift right at the end of the first half when Lauren Wyffels grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back right before the buzzer to give the Cougars a 21-15 lead at the break.
The Cougars built up a 10-point lead right out of the break, but Spring Grove wasn't going away. Jordian Leahy and Emerson Ingalson made big shots down the stretch to narrow the lead down to four at 27-23 with just over 12 minutes to go.
The Cougars built the lead back up to five at 31-26. Leahy hit a bucket, and then Ava Olerud hit a three with just over 3 minutes to go to tie the score at 31. The Cougars were able to score their final three points at the line and secure the 34-31 victory.
Wyffels finished with 10 points and six rebounds to pace the Cougars, while Thea Snyder added nine and Jordyn Newgard had seven. Leahy had 10 to lead the Lions. Ingvalson and Addyson McHugh added seven each.
Both teams played incredibly hard throughout this game. Every rebound there were multiple players chasing them down, and every loose ball had multiple players on the floor trying to gain possession for their team. Both squads played with grit and effort.
The Cougars moved to 1-1 with the win while the Lions fell to 0-3 on the season.
