According to the Mayo Clinic, less than 2% of the population has B- blood, so it is a very rare blood type.  Patients who have B- blood can only receive B- blood or the universal blood type, O-, so when the supply of B- is in short supply it is almost like needing to shout from the mountain tops hoping that individuals with B-blood hear the message.
