Mysterious Mermaid Sits 3.5 Miles Off the Shore of Minnesota

Plenty of people claim to see Bigfoot roaming the woods of Minnesota. Now people are starting to see mermaids! Ok, it's a statue of a mermaid. It's still a very cool site to see regardless, and she sits only about 3.5 miles off the shore of Minnesota.

The statue is way up north, east of International Falls, in Rainy Lake. Technically the statue is in Canada based on the line that cuts the lake in half.

The mermaid statue was constructed of "steel rods, old boat propellers, and cement" back in the 1930s, according to a site called Heart of the Continent. You can tell that she's seen some things because of what appears to be algae growing on her.

Who Built the Mermaid in Rainy Lake?

She sits on a rock in the middle of the lake all alone. Gordon A. Schlichting is the architect behind the statue. He built her while he was on vacation at his uncle's cabin after his school let out for summer break. Apparently, he'd go out and work on the mermaid to get out of doing chores. Heart of the Continent says that it took Gordon 3 months to build. After that, he actually ended up becoming a very successful architect, but he would still go visit the mermaid he built.

You're only able to visit the mermaid by boat, so if you're planning on going up that direction this summer, plan accordingly!
