St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) -Despite its brutal winters, Minnesota has again been identified as one of the best states in the U.S. to choose for a retirement home.

The website Bankrate.com has Minnesota listed ffth, with high grades for quality health care, culture and well being. On the downside, the state was given low marks for taxes and the weather. In fact, Minnesota was rated the third-worst state for weather and was seventh from the bottom for taxation. Minnesota’s highest rank was third-best in the nation for quality health care. The state’s overall well-being score was also high, at No. 4, while Minnesota was ranked seventh for culture.

New Hampshire was ranked No. 1 this year, followed by Colorado, Maine and Iowa. Alaska was listed as the worst place to retire even though it was ranked No. 1 in the taxes category.

Gov. Mark Dayton celebrated Minnesota’s ranking, noting it is among several that have put the state near the top nationally as places for seniors to live.

“This report offers yet another national accolade for the world-class quality of life that people of all ages enjoy here in Minnesota,” said Governor Mark Dayton, who said it’s “No surprise that the state that’s home to Mayo Clinic ranks near the top for health care. Minnesota also provides retirees with low costs, safe cities and an all-around comfortable way of life.”

Last year, the American Association of Retired Persons put out a report that identified Minnesota as the best state in the nation to retire.
