Mower County Sheriff Asks Public To Stay Away From Taopi
Taopi, MN (KROC AM News) - Mower County public safety officials are asking the public to stay away from the town of Taopi as it recovers from the damage caused by a suspected tornado.
Mower County Sheriff Steve Sandvik says his dispatch center began receiving several 911 calls minutes after a tornado warning was issued at 10:37 pm Tuesday.
Sandvik says the calls involved “multiple damaged homes and trapped residents from the Taopi area.”
Sandvik says two residents who were trapped in their basement were rescued and taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. He says the affected areas in Taopi were searched and evacuated as needed. Sheltering was supplied to three families while others sheltered with family and/or friends.
The sheriff says first responders included his deputies, firefighters from nearby Adams and LeRoy and other mutual aid partners. He says Mower County Public Works and local utility companies responded to downed power lines, gas leaks and debris.
MnDOT says Highway 56 in the Taopi area was still closed as of 10:00 am Wednesday:
