SE Minnesota Raked by Winds Over 70 MPH
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Winds gusting above 70-miles-per-hour caused extensive damage and power outages across southeastern Minnesota last night.
There have been widespread reports of downed trees in and around the Rochester area. To the south of the city, damage to farm buildings was reported in Marion Township and there was a report of a lightning strike causing a structure fire in Blooming Prairie. Utility crews remain busy this morning repairing storm damage and restoring power to affected customers.
Reports of wind gusts between 55 and 60 MPH were common throughout the region, but the National Weather Service reported gusts above 70 MPH in Wabasha County near Zumbro Falls. The storm system also produced possible tornadoes in northern Iowa and western Wisconsin.
Heavy rain also accompanied the storm system as it moved across the region in the evening. About three-quarters of an inch was reported at the Rochester Airport, while over an inch was reported in many areas.
