Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A Rochester woman was scammed out of a few thousand dollars in what police say was a pretty elaborate scheme.

The 22-year-old says she received a call from a person who said they were from the Social Security office. The caller told the woman her number had been compromised and used in money laundering and drug activity.

The caller asked the woman for the Rochester Police Dept. phone number and told her someone would be in touch with her.

The woman says she was contacted by two “officers'' and that her phone Caller ID read “Rochester Police Department. “ The “officers” said she would receive a new social security number and that her bank account would be frozen. But she became suspicious when they began talking about gift cards.

They then asked her to transfer money from her bank account to a cash app on her phone. They told her to transfer the money to some debit cards so they could open a new bank account and gave her the numbers.

By the time the woman became aware it was a scam, she was out of $3400.

RPD says its officers were not involved in the phone call and that the caller ID was bogus.
