Rochester YMCA Memories – See That Time Pauly Shore Was at the Y
The Rochester Area Family YMCA's building is shutting down at the end of this month, and stories about fun and adventure at the Y are popping up everywhere!
Rochester's best-known filmmaker, Tyler J. Aug, had a true brush with greatness, back in 2013 or so. He was at the Y doing some work, and who should he see but the Biggest Star of the '90s, Pauly Shore!
Tyler takes up the story...
Right. So, gosh, it was a Sunday. I was a little hungover. I had been working with the media manager there on some campaign videos and she says, "OH! Pauly Shore's here today. He's like shooting part of a documentary in the gym there."
And I'm like, wait you, so, uh, why is Pauly Shore in Rochester? I mean, I grew up on MTV Spring Break and I remember watching Son-In-Law with my parents. You know, laughing their heads off. And, Bio Dome, I mean he was huge in the nineties there.
So, we kind of waited around and...hear a little bit of commotion out in the lobby area and he comes out and he's with a few people that have a camera. Everybody's kind of got that, "Oh, there's a celebrity here" thing going on. They're kind of tiptoing around."
So a manager asks to get a group photo, and then...when the photo's over, I kind of pat him on the back. I'm like, Pauly, I love you, man. Can I get a hug? And he has this whole kind of awkward freakout! He said he had just gotten back surgery or something and he is like, "No touching!"
He kind of starts walking away from me looking like I'm a maniac. Then I say DUDE! Pauly, I'm sorry, man. I'm sorry. I love you. You know, and I was like, you know, I grew up watching you. And, um, so he finally like stepped in with an angry face and I'm like leaning in just to get a quick shot.
Could have gotten weird. But he was nice enough to actually come back and take a photo. So you have credit for that.

Don't Recycle That!
I suppose because people are starting their New Year Resolution of "Clean this place up!" we've been getting a lot of calls about what can and can't be recycled in Rochester and Olmsted County.
