Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester Police Department will soon lose one of its longtime leaders.

Capt. John Sherwin has been selected as the next police chief in Faribault.

Sherwin was one of three finalists for the job and was selected by the city council last Wednesday.

The 48-year-old Sherwin has been with RPD since 2001 and was promoted to captain in 2011. Sherwin served as interim chief for a few months after the retirement of Roger Peterson in April 2018.

LOOK: What 25 Historic Battlefields Look Like Today

The following is an examination of what became of the sites where America waged its most important and often most brutal campaigns of war. For each one, Stacker investigated what happened there when the battles raged as well as what became of those hallowed grounds when the fighting stopped.

These are the battlefields that defined the United States military’s journey from upstart Colonial rebels to an invincible global war machine.
