The Minnesota State Patrol has had extra speed enforcement across the state as it attempts to lower the number of speed-related fatalities on Minnesota roads.

Today, its focus is in the Rochester area including Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, and Winona counties.

Yesterday, the State Patrol wrote over 225 speeding tickets with extra enforcement on the roads in the Twin Cities Region.

On May 14th, the Minnesota State Patrol issued over 160 speeding tickets, on May 17th they issued over 160 tickets again.

The State Patrol will have extra enforcement in the Mankato and Brainerd regions tomorrow as a part of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety's "High Visibility Speed Patrols Focus Traffic Safety Campaign."

According to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, as of May 12th, there were  56 speed-related deaths compared with 26 this time last year. The speed-related fatalities are the primary contributor to an overall traffic fatality rate that is far exceeding last year and historical averages.

The Minnesota DPS said that preliminary figures show 129 people have died in traffic crashes since Jan. 1 compared to 94 at this time in 2020. The last time Minnesota reached 129 fatalities by May 12 was in 2008 when 133 people died on Minnesota roads up to that date.

The Minnesota State Patrol has also had an increase in speeding citations.

State Patrol troopers have issued 25,729 speeding citations through April 29th compared with 24,239 tickets written at this time last year. Troopers have also cited 325 motorists for going 100 mph or more through April 29th compared with 306 this time last year.
