The Oldest Basilica in the Country is Right Here in Minnesota
There are many basilicas across the world and the country, but there's a basilica in Minnesota that's the oldest one in the country. Who would have thought! Out of all the basilicas in the US, Minnesota has the oldest.
According to Only In Your State, the basilica we're talking about that's the oldest is the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis. I've never been inside the Basilica of St. Mary but I've been on the outside and it's so pretty!
The Basilica of St. Mary opened in 1914, so it's 107 years old and has been a staple in Minneapolis ever since. Even looking at the Twin Cities skyline you'll be able to see and recognize the basilica.
If you're like me and you've never been inside the basilica, you can visit even if you aren't catholic. You can do a self-guided tour and take your time looking at all of the amazing sculptures, stained glass windows, and architecture or you can do a guided tour. The guided tours are free and available Sunday through Friday except on holidays and during Holy Week. Weekday tours can be requested online and Sunday tours happen after the 9:30 AM and 11:30 AM mass.
A trip to the Basilica of St. Mary might be in order now. Not only is it a cool historical place, but it's also the oldest of its kind in the whole country!
Speaking of churches, the basilica is huge but there are also some super tiny churches in Minnesota. Keep scrolling to check them out.
