Twins’ Miguel Sano Will Not Faces Charges After Hitting Police Officer With Truck
Minnesota Twins' Third Baseman Miguel Sano will not face charges after striking a police officer with his truck while in the Dominican Republic.
ESPN reports that Sano will not face charges after hitting the police officer as the officer who was struck by the truck, Argenis Emilio Gillandeux, said that the accident was not intentional. Sano did not abandon the scene of the accident.
Reports also indicate that Sano knew Gillandeux, and the two attended school together. Gillandeux, who suffered a broken leg, was transported to the hospital by Sano. Coronel Frank Durán Mejía of the Dominican National Police told Enrique Rojas on Monday that Sano went to back up his pickup without realizing that Gillandeux was still behind the truck and had not moved his motorcycle yet.
"The citizen, Miguel Sanó, was sent today to the traffic court to comply with the due process in these types of cases," said Durán. "It is a formality when someone is injured in a vehicular accident. It is important to clarify that the policeman declared that the accident was not intentional, and that Sanó hit his leg when Sanó was reversing his vehicle to leave the place and that the baseball player was the first to provide help and never abandoned the scene. Neither the agent nor the national police plan to charge Sanó with anything."
Durán also said that Sano offered to pay for all of Gillandeux's medical expenses.
Sano is coming off his worst season to date with the Minnesota Twins, where he hit .199 in just 71 games. Sano was an All-Star in 2017.
