My friend, Tonja, posted this on her Facebook page today and it instantly caught my eye.

flag etiquette

The entire caption reads "you don't burn it, you don't walk on it and you don't let it touch the ground". I love our American flag and love to see it flying at businesses and residences. Do you know flag etiquette? According to the Flag Code, our flag should never touch the ground.  If a flag is flown at night, it must be illuminated.  The code prohibits using the American flag for "any advertising purpose" and also states that the flag "should not be embroidered, printed, or otherwise impressed on such articles as cushions, handkerchiefs, napkins, boxes, or anything intended to be discarded after temporary use".  Admittedly, that rule is generally ignored as folks, including myself, use images of our flags in home decorating.  When a flag is so tattered that it can no longer serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning.  If you have an old, worn out flag, chances are your local American Legion will handle proper disposal.  I will add one more here, my own opinion, when you see our flag passing, such as in a parade procession, remove your cap and place your right hand over your heart.   Please, friends, respect our flag.
