Woman Sent To Prison For Minnesota Visa Scam
Minneapolis (KROC AM News) - An Eden Prairie woman has been sentenced to federal prison for a visa scam and is facing deportation.
The US Attorney’s office in Minneapolis says 36-year-old Yurida Linares was sentenced Friday to six months and after serving the sentence “she will be removed from the United States to Mexico.”
Prosecutors say Linares conspired with four people to help get them what’s known as a U Nonimmigrant Visas (“U-Visas”) last year.
According to the US Attorney, victims of certain criminal activities that occur in the United States may be eligible to apply for and obtain a U Visa. A victim who obtains a U Visa may subsequently apply to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to adjust their status to become a lawful permanent resident of the United States.
The four people she conspired with falsely reported they were victims of robberies committed in Eden Prairie. She even used a box cutter or other sharp object to cut the four before they filed their bogus reports. Linares then collected a $2,000 fee from each person.
