Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  A pedestrian was seriously injured Friday night in northwest Rochester.

A police spokesman says the 31-year-old man was struck in the 1800 block of 19th St NW around 7:30 PM.

The spokesman says the man sustained a “severe head injury” and was breathing but unresponsive when taken to St Marys Hospital. His name has not been released.

The spokesman says the driver did not see the man in the street. The man was wearing a dark coat.

There was a close call for one of the officers at the scene.

The spokesman says although there were several vehicles in the area with their emergency lights activated and a squad car was partially blocking the road, another motorist drove into the area.

The spokesman says the driver finally stopped after nearly striking an officer. In fact, the vehicle’s bumper was touching an officer’s leg when it stopped.

The 18-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI. The spokesman says it’s suspected he was under the influence of drugs.
