Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -The search for a permanent superintendent of Rochester Public Schools ended before it officially began.

The RPS board was scheduled to kickstart the search process at its Tuesday meeting but ended up offering the job to interim superintendent Kent Pekel.

And he accepted.

Pekel disclosed he had been recruited and applied for two other openings but told the board he was “deeply honored” to be offered the local job and that “There is no place I’d rather be.”

The board’s offer to Pekel came after it was told a recent community survey found 185 of 215 respondents had indicated they favored him for the position.

The board voted unanimously to offer Pekel the job and negotiations on a long-term contract will now begin. It could be ready in time for the board’s next meeting or sooner.

Pekel has been serving as interim superintendent since last July and had been working under a one-year contract.
